Weekly planning

The topic for this week is ‘Different Skills and Abilities’.  During this week, the teachers will introduce and extend the topic by reading the following books – ‘Elmer’ and ‘Little Miss Tiny’. 


Through our planning, we aim to cover all the areas of the EYFS. The children will learn and consolidate and extend their maths skills, literacy, understanding of the world and explore different sensory materials while they participate in the activities that the teachers have designed for them.

Week: 29 April – 03 May 2024

Big group morning

Personal, social and emotional development: The teachers will introduce the topic and talk about life without limbs: wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs. The children will discover the lives of Sarah, David and Beknur and how they keep doing amazing things without limbs.

Role plays and collaborative activities are part of our daily routine: Selecting greetings in the morning (from 4 options given to them); Daily register through train station role play (children have their own Oyster cards and tap on the card reader); Participating in conversations during circle time and being in charge of certain tasks to make them more responsible and enhance their self-esteem.

Communication and Language: The teachers will introduce the topic and talk about life without limbs: wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs. The children will discover the lives of Sarah, David and Beknur and how they keep doing amazing things without limbs.

Physical Development: We will take a short trip to the station traffic light where children can experience by themselves the sound and the little spinning wheel underneath the traffic light button to help blind people navigate the streets safely. We will also look for bumpy pavement to understand that a road is nearby. The children will create prosthetic limbs for your peg people using playdough.

In the garden children will be able to use and develop their gross motor skills, climbing on the slide, running and playing with different equipment.

Literacy: Encouraging the love for books by including library time during our daily routine. The children will sing the song for Jolly Phonic S, A, T, P, I, N, D, K, C,R, E, O,W, B, G, H, F, U, J and L. The children will create Letter L using pegs. They will feel the pegs with your fingers, while blindfolded and try to guess the letter ( l or L)

Mathematics:

Our daily snack shop role play will help the children practise their maths skills (numbers 1-5/ 1-10) as well as enhance their understanding of the world. 

Understanding the world: We will talk about life without limbs, wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs. The children will discover the lives of Sarah, David and Beknur and how they keep doing amazing things without limbs. We will introduce the phonic song for L. Introduce the concept of Braille, used for people who cannot see.

Expressive arts and design: Learn the phonic song for letters L. The children will create prosthetic limbs for your peg people using playdough.. Once finished, each child will share their creations with the group.



Big group afternoon

Personal, social and emotional development: We will introduce the topic by reading the book ‘Little Miss Tiny’. The teachers will introduce the topic, talk about how we are all different. We will introduce the “Priority seat sign”from the morning to talk about respect and ability. We will ask questions like – Do you have any special skills? What happens when your body needs support to function? (talk about wheelchairs, crutches, glasses, guide dogs, sticks, etc.

.Physical Development: The children will look carefully at the braille letters, try writing the letters by poking on the back of the paper(mirror writing) in the tiles and poke their name on the mat. They will practise pencil control and use one handed tools: brushes, scissors. etc. 

In the garden children will be able to use and develop their gross motor skills, climbing on the slide, running and playing with different equipments

Literacy: Encouraging the love for books by including library time during our daily routine. Book of the week: ‘Little Miss Tiny’. The children will revisit all the phonic songs for letters learnt so far.

Mathematics: The children will count the patterns in each box, write the numbers under the pattern and add the numbers and write the total on the roof.

Little group

Personal, social and emotional development: The teachers will introduce the topic using puppets and read the book: ‘Elmer’.  We will prepare a tray with cornflakes and disable toys inside (wheelchair, girl on crutches…). The teachers will explain what is BSL and learn some words. (Happy, sad, thank you, sorry, please, more, bye…).

Role plays and collaborative activities are part of our daily routine. During Circle time, the children greet the teachers and each other by singing the ‘Hello’ song and ‘Please and Thank You’. We will introduce names of each child and teachers through songs.

The children are encouraged to follow the personal hygiene routine.

Communication and Language: During Circle time, the children greet the teachers and each other and also learn ‘Please and Thank You’ by singing the song.

Physical Development: Below each child’s name, their name will be written in Braille. The children will then place stickers over the dots. Afterward, we’ll demonstrate how blind people read using these raised dots.

In the garden children will be able to use and develop their gross motor skills, climbing on the slide, running and playing with different equipment.

Literacy: Encouraging the love for books by including library time during our daily routine.

Mathematics: The children will count the number of children in the small group.

Understanding the world: During this week, the teachers will introduce and extend the topic by reading the following book – ‘Elmer’. Below each child’s name, their name will be written in Braille. The children will then place stickers over the dots. Afterward, we’ll demonstrate how blind people read using these raised dots.

Trains, garages and cars will will be set out for the children.

Expressive arts and design: The children will sing songs: ‘Hello’ and ‘Please and Thank You’. The children will colour a big Elmer using crayons to decorate the room.
